Patent settlement agreements and EU competition law

When the European Commission released its July 2009 report into competition and patent issues in the European pharmaceutical industry, it promised to monitor the situation. In particular, the Commission wanted to keep an eye on patent settlement agreements which kept generics out of the market in return for some 'value transfer' from originator pharmaceutical companies.

Litigation and Dispute Resolution Expert – Part-Time

They may also be required to provide submissions and prosecute the matter at hearings.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

• A well developed ability to analyse complex information, often within tight timeframes
• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
• A sound understanding of the principles of natural justice
• An understanding of effective investigative processes

The degree of investigation activity is dependent on the nature and frequency of alleged rule beaches. Local Government Intensive (20 August 2010)

From the Chair:

It is difficult to imagine a better time to hold this intensive.

We are in the midst of one of the most dramatic changes in New Zealand’s local government landscape – the creation of the Auckland Council. This is no mere amalgamation of existing local bodies. It is a grand experiment in local democracy and ways in which we plan and execute local initiatives. Its potential application to other regions in New Zealand is apparent. At the same time important changes to the reporting and governance obligations of local authorities are before Parliament, including benchmarking of performance across all councils. The sad saga of leaky homes and the huge financial burden this is putting on homeowners and local government lurches on. It has become a challenge of almost overwhelming proportions as the protagonists search for a better solution.

This intensive will cover all those issues as well as addressing other key legal developments in the sector. It will be an ideal opportunity for lawyers active in the local government space, in-house and external, to deepen their understanding of this increasingly dynamic area, its challenges and opportunities.

Can you really patent that?

To people outside the food industry, the idea of patenting food may seem ridiculous. Some might even consider food patents a little unfair, given the fundamental importance of food to us all. But many new food products are, in fact, patented.
